which legendary actress has lost the best actress oscar a whopping 18 times?

The late American actress Katharine Hepburn has been in the industry for over six decades, and she is one of the most widely recognized actresses ever. Often referred to as “the most elegant woman in America” or “America’s most beloved actress,” Ms. Hepburn has kept acting going after her film career ended at age 54, winning many prestigious awards including an honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which includes members from both acting and film worlds.

But despite being nominated 18 times for Best Actress Oscar, Katharine Hepburn never actually won the award until 1992 when she was finally presented with her very first Oscar statuette for her performance in The Lion King. The only other time she was presented with an Oscar was in 1954, when she won Best Supporting Actress for Annie Get Your Gun.

In her six-decade acting career, Katharine Hepburn got nominated for an Oscar a total of 19 times, and she also won two awards, which is far less than many other actors of her stature. According to Wikipedia (where the current version can be found here: ), Hepburn was nominated for Best Actress three additional times: for Morning Glory (1933), Alice Adams (1935), and Woman of the Year (1942).

Hepburn also had a few other nominations, and one of those was for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The other three were all for the Best Actress award: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), On Golden Pond (1981), and finally, The Lion King (1994).

In the popularity contest that is acting or movie awards, Katharine Hepburn has never taken or won any of the top awards acting or film in her six decades of acting (she supposedly retired at age 54 but still acted afterward as far as we can tell). But despite her lack of a win for Best Actress, she’s been nominated 19 times in her long career.

Most of Katharine Hepburn’s acting peers have had more success than she does: some 17 honorary Oscar awards, 15 times being nominated for Best Actress, and 18 times for Best Supporting Actress. No actresses of her era have as many Academy Award nominations as Hepburn. If one looks at the other acting categories (Best Directing, Best Film Editing, etc), her contemporaries don’t win nearly as much in their career as she does despite their huge popularity and great recognition.

Patricia Neal was the only other actress to be nominated for so many different categories—12 [ ] in total. This means that she had more Oscar nominations than Hepburn did and also won an award which is extremely rare for an actress to win.

(Note: Even though most of Katharine Hepburn’s peers have more awards than her, she still has one of the top records when it comes to acting awards—hers are incredible accomplishments considering how long she has been in the industry. She has still never won a major statuette like Best Actress or Best Supporting Actor, but Katharine Hepburn was also nominated for multiple honorary awards (17 of them). Patricia Neal received 12 honorary awards [ ].)

Katharine Hepburn has won one Oscar (The Lion King), and Patricia Neal won 12. Other notable female actresses to win an Oscar include Sophia Loren, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Helen Hayes and Meryl Streep.

(Note: Some of the figures are not exactly accurate but show up as close to the truth as possible on Wikipedia which we will use for this article. We will also use the other acting categories to compare actress’s win rates and total awards to see who wins more and who has a better overall record.)

1 Anne Baxter – 7 Awards (5 Oscar Nominations, 2 wins)

2 Anne Bancroft – 6 Awards (3 Oscar Nominations, 3 wins)

3 Joan Crawford – 6 Awards (2 Oscar Nominations, 3 wins)

4 Katharine Hepburn – 5 Awards (2 Oscar Nominations, 3 wins) → 1 win in total on less than 10 films. 5 nominations in total. 9 nominations overall for acting. 1 win overall on 3 films. 49 nominations overall for acting.
